This is the answer to the second question from the article “Choosing a graphic artist”
What should companies know about working with graphic artists and printing companies?
Get the proposal in writing.
Graphic artists and printers will usually charge a deposit before the job is started. Once the job is completed and the client signs off on the final proof, before the file is sent to press, payment will be requested in full.
Find out if there is direct communication with the artist, or does the client have to go through a representative. This is one of the pros and cons between using a freelance artist and a graphic design firm. The freelance artist will have direct communication with the client. However, if a graphic design firm is used the client will “usually” talk with a representative. On the other hand, some people like perceived stability and accountability of using a firm.
If an owner is expecting copies of the files, make sure this is discussed before the bid is submitted. Find out if a copy of the files will be sent electronically, or will a CD be mailed; sometimes there is an additional charge to send files, this needs to be understood from the beginning.
Another very important step is proofing the design. If there is a mistake and the job is sent to press, most graphic artist and printers will not take responsibility if the proof is signed off. In some cases this can mean having to reprint; and this can be very expensive.
